Unit 1 - Aqueous solutions (project 1)
Unit 1 explores how ionic compounds behave in water, focusing on solubility, precipitation, and acid–base neutralization processes. Students develop and apply solubility rules by conducting laboratory experiments to predict precipitation reactions, and they learn to represent these at the molecular, ionic, and net‑ionic levels. Additionally, the unit introduces oxidation–reduction concepts—students assign oxidation states, distinguish redox from non‑redox reactions, balance redox equations using formal methods, and examine real‑world applications like batteries and electroplating.
What is the project about?
The main project here is that you will have to identify 12 mystery solutions based on various laboratory techniques.
You will be provided with the 12 possible solutions and your task is to identify each of the solutions to your 12 unknown solutions.
Techniques you will use:
– Use the solubility table of all combinations to observe precipitates or no precipitate reactions
– pH testing of each solution
– physical properties such as colour, smell etc…
– The project will culminate into a formal lab report or a large format poster presentation.
Resources
What you need to know
– Can you write molecular, ionic, and net ionic chemical reactions?
– Can you explain what happens to a chemical when it is in aqueous solution?
– Can you explain examples of solubility and precipitation at the particulate
and symbolic levels?
– Can you develop a set of solubility rules?
– Can you use a table of solubility rules to predict the formation of a
precipitate?
– Can you design and test a procedure to determine the identity of a variety
of unknown solutions?
